Symposium “A Future with Methanation” hosted by the Institute for Policy Analysis and Social Innovation

[Institute for Policy Analysis and Social Innovation] 2023.07.18

On Friday, June 16, 2023, from 6:00 p.m., the Institute for Policy Analysis and Social Innovation, University of Hyogo, hosted the “Institute for Policy Analysis and Social Innovation, University of Hyogo Symposium ‘The Future with Methanation’” at the Hyogo Prefectural Citizens’ Hall, co-hosted by the Japan Society of Public Utility Economics and the Hydrogen Energy Joint Research Center of the University of Hyogo. The symposium was attended by about 150 people both in person and online.
Since last year, the Institute for Policy Analysis and Social Innovation has been holding symposiums themed on “building a decarbonized society,” or a society with zero greenhouse gas emissions, as part of its efforts to realize the SDGs. This year\'s first symposium, titled “A Future with Methanation,” was held to explore the possibilities of methanation.
In order to realize a “decarbonized society,” the most promising technology for decarbonizing city gas is “methanation,” which synthesizes methane (CH4), the main component of natural gas, by reacting hydrogen (H2) with carbon dioxide (CO2). How will this “synthetic methane (e-methane)” technology grow into a pillar of our “decarbonized society?” One keynote speaker, one discussant, and five panelists presented a two-hour symposium jointly organized by Japan Society of Public Utility Economics and the University\'s Hydrogen Energy Joint Research Center. The symposium was moderated by Shinichi Kusanagi, Vice President of the University. The symposium was moderated by Vice President Shinichi Kusanagi.
