Moss Terrarium Lecture” at WELLCO in Osaka Umeda Twin Towers South

[Graduate School of Landscape Design and Management] 2022.10.10

On Wednesday, September 14th, and Wednesday, October 5th, we held a moss terrarium workshop for office workers at WELLCO in Osaka Umeda Twin Towers South. Hanshin Engei Co., Ltd., which manages the greenery of Osaka Umeda Twin Towers South, and the Hyogo Prefectural Awaji Landscape Planning & Horticulture Academy and University of Hyogo Graduate School have signed an industry-academia collaboration agreement to improve the quality of greenery and revitalize the community in the Umeda 1-chome area. As part of this initiative, Associate Professors Tabuchi and Oyabu from our school conducted the workshop with the support of students. The workshop aimed to provide office workers with opportunities to interact with plants and greenery, expand their interest in greenery and plants through the experience of making and managing terrariums. Each session was open to 20 participants, but due to high demand, with 90 applications, participants were selected by lottery.

Before taking their seats, participants were asked to choose their favorite jars from among four types prepared for this lecture. The students were prepared with long tweezers, scissors, plastic spoons, and misting sprayers, which they do not usually use, and each person created his or her own unique creation using moss, scenic stones, decorative sand, and human and animal figures, which were distributed to the participants to pick up freely. The lecture was initially scheduled to last one hour, but the participants were so enthusiastic that the time was extended, and they all created unique and beautiful moss terrariums. After the class, participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire. We hope that the moss terrariums created by the students will be placed on their desks in their offices and homes, and that they will experience the growth and vitality of greenery.
