The Cultural Exchange Party is a program that helps students who are in Japan, experience a different culture by hosting an event. In the event, there are performances, games, group discussion, food, etc. This year’s Cultural Exchange Party was different as the COVID-19 pandemic restricted many of the possible activities. Like cooking food, eating, dancing in a group, and having a big group discussion. However, I believe the 2020 event was a success given the circumstances of the situation.

This year’s Cultural Exchange Party was on 5th December 2020. However, committee members started preparing for the event on 15th October 2020. In the meeting, all committee members proposed many ideas. The committee members were from different campuses, and therefore, in the meeting, we all were connected through Zoom as it was convenient and safer. At last, we all finalized; “word wolf” as an ice breaking activity, free talking, three music performances (rap, band performance, and solo), and a Japanese dance called “Soran-Bushi”. After deciding on the games and performance, we all started preparing for it.

The first performance was rap songs then we had a band performance. I was a committee member and a band member as a guitarist as well. We sang one English song which was “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran and a Japanese song “Neko” by Dish. Interestingly, our singer was Yoshioka Megumi, and although she is Japanese, she sang “Shape of You” flawlessly. Then the next performance was a solo by Martha. Martha is a second-year GBC student; she sang one Spanish song and a Japanese song that she wrote. Then comes the word wolf as an ice breaking activity, and free talk. The core purpose of these games was interaction while having fun. There were many questions to get to know each other, and there were toys like Kendama and Koma. Lastly, we had a dance performance call “Soran-Bushi”. We planned to dance with everyone. However, due to the pandemic, we couldn’t do that. Therefore, our dance team taught everyone dance moves while they were sitting. I took this picture when participants were copying the moves while sitting. I like this picture as it shows no matter how the circumstances are, there is always something we can do.

Finally, I think the Cultural Exchange Party is quite beneficial program as it’s a very interactive program. I made many Japanese friends from another department which would not have been possible if it was not for the event. If possible, I would like to participate next year.

The Cultural Exchange Party was a very pleasant introduction. We got to meet many people from Japan and other parts of the world.

The event was opened with spectacular performances. From rapping to performing a comedy skit, the opening gave us everything. My favorite part was the comedy skit. I was amazed at how well they performed the skit. It was simple yet impactful.

There were various activities that we did. First, we did an ice breaking activity by playing the game “word wolf”. This was a great choice of game as we communicate a lot and it was very fun. Then, we got to the main event, free talking.

I was guided to the i-Square building, and we were divided by groups. We were also given many activities to do there. There were Japanese traditional games spots and also talking spots. My favorite spots were the talking spots as I get to know some new people. Lastly, the event was closed by an exciting dance of “Soran-Bushi”. The audience also got the chance to join the dance and it was very fun.

All and all the event was very fun and I hope it will improve on the next year.

The Cultural Exchange Party is really great idea and event that provides an amazing platform for all students from different backgrounds and countries to get together to sense similarities and differences among each other.

Such events help students not only to exchange opinions and knowledge but also helps students to develop the skill of communicating in groups with people from diverse background and how to quickly adapt and start communicating when we face sudden change in the environment and the group of people we are talking to.

I believe it’s very important to know how to change the figure of speech and the way we communicate when we interact with different kind of people on different topics. I think such events are very helpful, useful and productive especially for college/university students as its very important for students to have good communication skills which is very important part of students’ upcoming career. Such events are example of how students can practically apply various theories that they learn in classes about communication skill in real life.

For example, when I firstly had to talk to other students who were completely strangers for me it was difficult to open up and start talking however as the event moved on and I got to interact with more new students who I did not know it somehow got easily for me to start talking and build a good communicating environment among all of us.

Not only that such events help introverts to become extrovert, open up and learn many new amazing facts that they would have never heard before.

Therefore, such events are very helpful and useful for college students to enhance their communication skills, gain confidence to talk in public and last but not the least exchange knowledge among each other.
