On June 13~14 this year, as part of the Japan Culture Week organized by the Romanian-American University in collaboration with the University of Hyogo, a unique event (and a European premiere) took place in Bucharest, Romania. For the first time in Romania, two geiko (Ms. Ayano and Ms. Taka) and one maiko (Ms. Hidesaki) from Pontocho visited the country, taking place in a tea ceremony conducted by tea master Katsunori Meshii and the Urasenke Romania club, and performing traditional dances on the stage of the National Museum of Art of Romania.

This series of events was a multidisciplinary one, with a photo exhibition by Keiichiro Matsuo (a photographer who has received multiple awards in Japan and the United States) and based on field work conducted with Dr. Carmen Tamas in Pontocho, Kyoto, as well as ikebana, origami, kimono, and painting exhibitions by local artists Andreea Georgescu (ikebana), Alexandra Baranyi (origami), Laura Karaman (kimono), and Daniel Chereches (painting). One of the presenters of the event was a student from the School of Economics and Management, University of Hyogo, Akane Taomoto.

The University of Hyogo is pleased to have been able to support thus the dissemination of Japanese culture beyond the borders of Japan, contributing to the development of international cultural and educational projects.
